“The risk for a person with an apple-shaped body habitus appears to be higher compared to another person who is pear-shaped,” says Dr Tan Hong Chang from Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group. This is because for apple-shaped bodies, the fats distribution accumulated in the abdomen area builds around the abdominal organs. In general, health risk increase for men if their waist circumference is larger than 40 inches, and 35 inches for women.

Genetics also play a role in apple shapes and waistlines tend to increase with age, so it is advisable for even normal-weight people to pay attention to their waistline.
